From Airline Pilot to Mortgage Broker: The Story Behind Specialist Broking

What do airline pilots, doctors and mortgage brokers have in common?

More than you might think.

For Specialist Broking founder Daniel Jones, a career spanning finance and commercial aviation has shaped the way he approaches mortgage broking today — particularly when working with doctors and other medical professionals.

Daniel recently joined Passive Income Doctor to discuss his journey from finance to the cockpit and eventually back to finance, along with the lessons he has carried from aviation into mortgage broking.

An Early Career in Finance

Daniel’s interest in finance started well before Specialist Broking.

After finishing school, he found a customer service position with financial services company MLC while completing a Bachelor of Economics.

What started as a job to help pay the rent became an introduction to the financial services industry.

Daniel spent several years working across financial services and financial planning before eventually reaching a career crossroads.

Although there were opportunities within large financial institutions, he also had another long-standing interest: aviation.

That interest eventually became a second career.

Making the Move Into Commercial Aviation

Becoming a commercial airline pilot requires a significant commitment.

Training can involve more than $100,000 in costs, along with hundreds of hours of study, flying and practical experience.

For Daniel, the investment was worth it.

He joined Regional Express, better known as Rex, and spent several years flying in North Queensland before progressing to Jetstar.

It was a career he had worked hard to achieve.

But during this period, Daniel was also forced to deal with an unexpected challenge.

At 30, he was diagnosed with stage one bowel cancer.

Following surgery and recovery, he returned to flying and continued progressing through the aviation industry.

Then COVID-19 arrived.

When COVID Changed Everything

Like many airline employees, Daniel was stood down during the pandemic.

The timing could hardly have been more challenging.

His family had recently purchased a second investment property in Sydney, his wife had given birth to their first child, and suddenly the certainty of an airline salary disappeared.

There were two mortgages, rent and normal family expenses — but no regular income.

It became a powerful reminder that even a highly skilled professional with what appears to be a secure career can face financial uncertainty.

With time away from flying, Daniel returned to an industry he already understood: finance.

Alongside two other Qantas pilots, he started a mortgage broking business.

What initially began during the disruption of COVID soon developed into something more significant.

Daniel realised he enjoyed the work, the business was growing, and mortgage broking offered something his previous career could not always provide: greater control over his time, income and direction.

When his family was expecting their second child, he faced another major decision.

Return to aviation or commit fully to mortgage broking?

He chose broking.

Why Mortgage Broking Appealed to Daniel

One of the biggest differences between Daniel’s earlier career in banking and his role as a mortgage broker was choice.

Working for a single bank naturally means working with that bank's products.

As a broker, Daniel could instead assess different lenders and structures depending on the circumstances and objectives of the client.

That distinction becomes particularly important when the client has a more complex financial position.

The lowest advertised interest rate, for example, may not necessarily represent the most suitable lending strategy for someone who wants to release equity, purchase another property or restructure existing debt.

For some borrowers, a major bank may be appropriate.

For others, a regional or alternative lender may offer lending policies that better align with their circumstances.

The important question is not simply:

“Which lender has the lowest rate?”

It is:

“Which lending structure best supports what this client is trying to achieve?”

Why Specialist Broking Works With Medical Professionals

Daniel's experience working in finance exposed him to something interesting early in his career.

Highly educated and successful professionals can still benefit enormously from specialised financial guidance.

Intelligence and professional success do not automatically translate into having the time or specialist knowledge required to understand lending policies, borrowing structures and constantly changing bank requirements.

Doctors are a particularly good example.

Their financial circumstances may involve:

  • High but variable income

  • Multiple income sources

  • Private practice or business income

  • Investment properties

  • Existing debts and lending facilities

  • Plans to build a property portfolio

  • Limited time to compare lenders and lending policies

  • More complex long-term financial goals

That creates an opportunity for a broker who understands both lending and the demands of a medical career.

Rather than approaching a mortgage as an isolated transaction, the objective is to understand what the client is trying to achieve over the longer term.

The Importance of Reviewing Your Lending

Another important part of Daniel's approach is that obtaining a loan should not necessarily be the end of the relationship.

Circumstances change.

Income changes.

Property values move.

Lender policies change.

Interest rates change.

And a loan that made sense several years ago may no longer be the most appropriate option.

Daniel believes brokers should regularly review their clients' lending — often every six or twelve months — to determine whether there may be an opportunity to improve the structure or move from one lender to another.

This can be especially relevant where a client initially needed to use a more specialised lender to achieve a particular objective.

As their financial position evolves, there may eventually be opportunities to refinance to another lender.

The lending strategy can therefore evolve alongside the client.

What Aviation Taught Daniel About Mortgage Broking

On the surface, flying a commercial aircraft and arranging a home loan appear to be completely different jobs.

But Daniel sees several important similarities.

Aviation is built around systems.

Pilots use checklists, standard operating procedures and clearly defined processes because small mistakes can have serious consequences.

Modern aviation also places significant emphasis on crew resource management.

Historically, airline captains often operated within highly hierarchical environments where junior crew members could be reluctant to challenge a senior captain.

The aviation industry learnt that this approach could contribute to serious errors.

Today, pilots are trained to create an environment where crew members are encouraged to speak up when they identify a potential problem.

The objective is not to eliminate human error entirely.

It is to build systems that make mistakes less likely and easier to identify before they become serious.

The Parallels Between Aviation and Medicine

This is also where Daniel sees a strong connection between pilots and medical professionals.

Both work in environments where:

  • Procedures matter

  • Preparation matters

  • Communication matters

  • Checklists matter

  • Small details can have significant consequences

  • People place a high level of trust in the professional involved

Daniel points to surgeon and author Atul Gawande's work on the use of checklists in medicine as an example of how healthcare has adopted principles that have long been central to aviation.

In both industries, the goal is to create reliable processes without losing the professional judgement required when circumstances change.

The same philosophy influences the way Daniel approaches mortgage broking.

There should be a process.

There should be checks.

There should be clear communication.

And recommendations should be made within the context of the client's broader objectives rather than simply processing the next loan application.

Why Doctors and Pilots Often Understand Each Other

Daniel has also noticed another connection between the two professions.

Doctors and pilots often spend years developing highly specialised skills.

Both careers require considerable training, ongoing education and a willingness to accept significant responsibility.

There are even doctors who combine the two.

Daniel works with medical professionals who own aircraft and use them to travel between hospitals, clinics and regional locations.

For a specialist who regularly needs to travel between cities or regional centres, flying can turn what would otherwise be hours on the road into a much shorter journey.

But whether someone is flying an aircraft, performing surgery or building an investment portfolio, Daniel believes a similar mindset often applies:

Understand the objective, follow a strong process, assess the risks and make informed decisions.

Building Specialist Broking

Today, Daniel leads a team of five at Specialist Broking.

The business remains intentionally specialised, with a strong focus on providing clients with an efficient process and a high level of service.

His journey into broking was not a conventional one.

It involved financial services, commercial aviation, serious health challenges, COVID, property investing and eventually a major career change.

But those experiences have also shaped the way Specialist Broking operates today.

Daniel understands what it is like to have a demanding professional career.

He understands the importance of having reliable systems around important decisions.

And he understands that lending is rarely just about obtaining approval from a bank.

It is about making sure the lending structure supports where the client wants to go next.
